Our good friends, John & Jo Renfro, who have visited us here in Atlanta annually for several
years now, planned their trip to coincide with this event. They have been friends of Dennas since Jr. High. They arrived on Wed and on Thursday, we enjoyed our normal boys and girls day with John and I playing a round of golf while Denna and Jo had a spa day. I can't imagine the girls having a better time than John and I. It was one of those rare summer days when the weather was perfect for golf. Too bad I can't use the same adjective for describing my game. Oh well, even a bad round of golf is fun! The day was topped off with a fabulous meal at the elegant Thai restaurant, Nan's, in downtown Atlanta.
On Friday we were joined by another couple of long-time friends, Jim and Mary Cline. We've
known the Clines since our early days living in KC. They were our neighbors at Mayview and their daughters were our first babysitters for Adam and Angela. They started babysitting for us when Adam was only 6 weeks old and we've grown to consider them part of the family, just like the Renfros. What a treat and a blessing to have such wonderful and close friends willing to come so far to help celebrate your family's events. Thank you John and Jo, Jim and Mary. We love you all!
Friday evening everyone came to our house for a Green Egg meal of ribs and fixings.
Jim entertained us with his stories of his near-death experiences with Molly, our Australian Shephard that passed away a few years ago. Molly was known to get pretty protective at times and Jim experienced that firsthand once while visiting us here in Atlanta. (Molly wasn't that bad, was she?)
Saturday morning we were joined by Denna's brother and wife, Keith and Debbie, from Chicago. They got up at 3:30 that morning to catch a flight to Atlanta to join the festivities. We all then went to Adam and Taylor's loft for an Open House. Taylor, with help from her mother and sister had their place looking great, with fresh flowers and festive lights and lots of refreshing sangria! Yum!
A lot of Taylor's family and friends were at the Open House as well and it was good to meet and see them once again. It's wonderful how the two families have joined and become close so quickly. We feel like we've known them forever.
A little later that afternoon Denna was pleasantly surprised when her other brother, Daryl and
his wife Faye, arrived from Wisconsin. Adam had kept their attendence a secret. Now Denna had her whole family in town. That meant a lot to her. Daryl and Faye also had to get up well before dawn to make the flight from Madison. I guess those Shackelfords love the early dawn!
Taylor and Adam received many fine gifts, but as is his style, Jim
put his own unique touch on his gift for the newlyweds. It seems Jim had learned of an old Irish tradition regarding a Ships decanter and it's use as a measurement of marital bliss for newlyweds. Let's just say that we'll be counting beans for the next few years as we visit their loft!
The festivities continued later that evening at a hip urban restaurant, Two Urban Licks. Adam and Taylor had selected it for their reception and it was the perfect location, just off the other
The newlyweds departed early Sunday morning for a week-long honeymoon at St. Martins in the Caribbean. And our guests had to take off too, back to KC and the midwest. We had such a wonderful time with them all! Thanks to all for being such good and loyal friends!
